| **A
few words about Nantgarw pottery from a local viewpoint** Living so near to Nantgarw (7miles)we ourselves have talked to people whose grandparents travelled every week by horse and cart from Tonyrefail (1 mile from here) to Nantgarw to buy stock from the pottery that they then proceeded to sell in their Tonyrefail shop. They have verified that these wares were made in Nantgarw pottery. Over the years we have bought boxes of old clay pipes in auctions that were stamped Nantgarw. We used to pay a pittance for a whole box of pipes that now would cost a small fortune, such is the increase and interest in any scrap of anything that was produced at Nantgarw pottery..We used to be one of the lucky traders that actually sold in the Antiques fairs that were held in Nantgarw house and outbuildings in the 1990's.This was until the local authority changed hands, and it was deemed by them that money should not be changing hands in any Welsh Museum. This ridiculous red tape by the powers that be brought to the end our famous little Nantgarw Antiques fairs and many say the demise of the little museum itself. The revenue in stand charges and the teas and cakes supplied free by the Friends of Nantgarw Pottery, was used to buy priceless items of Nantgarw porcelain for the museum itself, and pay for the lectures and talks that were frequently held there to a packed audience --indeed the little house became alive again with excited collectors lucky enough to get a seat,or as many - standing room only!..Some of the dealers at these fairs were World famous names, they sold some of the best Nantgarw and Swansea Porcelain you would ever wish to see, equal in quality to many top museums,it was truly breathtaking. Sadly some of these famous names have now passed away, and others are getting on in years.Truly it is an honour to recall those happy days, when cups of teas, sandwiches and home made cakes were served once again on the lawns of Nantgarw pottery just as they used be in the days long ago when the Pardoes were living in the house. Many excavations were carried out there as the Kiln was rebuilt and the pipe house restored down by the old canal, and the dug up "wasters" or shards of pottery were laid out on the walls of the garden for any visitor to take home as they wished..The cellar room where William Billingsley produced the secret recipe for his best porcelain was always icy cold and draughty, there is a spiral flight of stone steps leading down to this special room from the ground floor. Our own stand, displaying our wares, was either upstairs in the bedroom area or just inside the Parlour near to the front door, where doubtless William Billingsley and his family sat in the evenings chatting and smoking their clay pipes all those years ago. In the Spring, the little garden out the front was a mass of bluebells and primroses, and in the Summer months it was the perfume of old Country Roses and lavender that wafted in through the wide open door, near to where we were sitting, eating our cucumber sandwiches and sipping our endless cups of tea.We will never forget the little Antiques fairs,it was a wonderful sight to see all the rows of Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain displayed - plate after plate, cups and saucers, vases etc. all decorated to the highest standard imagineable, and all displayed again in the house where they were first made. Well, just sharing a few thoughts that some of you may hopefully enjoy. |
