SWANSEA
PEARLWARE.2 matching Pink lustre Swansea Cambrian pottery pearlware
jugs c 1815.These are a great find as the condition is so good. The jugs
are unmarked apart from one or two pressers mark.Swansea made quite
a lot of Pink Lustre, and the diamond hand painted patterns. The decoration
is very primitive and naive, but this is typical of Swansea pottery everday
wares. The lustre has worn off the front of the jugs, but the overall
condition is really very good for the age.£59 each jug |

becoming rare to find but this is a good example. The swirls of hand
painted enamels commonly found on Cambrian wares, although many jugs

edging is still good. This well documented jug that all Swansea collectors
will instantly recognise is in good condition, slight age marks - commensurate
with 200years,is to be expected.Lovely on display. £110.Free post

bluish hue as it should do -- there is a slight star hairline underneath
and nothing else.No restoration at all,no chips,no cracks. You will never

SWANSEA
POTTERY.DYVATTY STREET POTTERY. Rare and very large Game jug in Rockingham
glaze or treacle glaze. This jug came in 6 graduated sizes and we believe
that this is the largest of the 6 sizes...Staffordshire also made these
Game jugs but they are poor examples against the better Swansea pottery
Welsh ones. There is a greyhound handle and a very well moulded handle
unlike the Staffordshire greyhound handles.Anyway the jug is very well
documented in E. Morton Nance's epic book on Swansea and Nantgarw pottery
and porcelain and also there is an example to be found in the Swansea
Museum, the Glyn Vivian gallery. There are 3 ancient rim chips that have
been well coloured over but not filled in,please note this was done
many years before we purchased the jug, however overall condition is
excellent with no cracks or restoration.Whoever buys this jug will be
very pleased.£250/free post GB. |

 Cambrian
childs plates.Matching pair of pink lustre plates made in the great Cambrian
pottery,Swansea. The plates were made in c1820,the pink lustre was probably
applied by John Harries or "Old Harris" as E.Morton Nance refers

in the lustre paintshop for quite some years. There is a Capital "S"
imprressed in the rear of one plate. The only fault is a very small edge

**A
few words about Nantgarw pottery from a local viewpoint**
Living so near to Nantgarw (7miles)we ourselves have talked to people
whose grandparents travelled every week by horse and cart from Tonyrefail
(1 mile from here) to Nantgarw to buy stock from the pottery that they
then proceeded to sell in their Tonyrefail shop. They have verified that
these wares were made in Nantgarw pottery. Over the years we have bought
boxes of old clay pipes in auctions that were stamped Nantgarw. We used
to pay a pittance for a whole box of pipes that now would cost a small
fortune, such is the increase and interest in any scrap of anything that
was produced at Nantgarw pottery..We used to be one of the lucky traders
that actually sold in the Antiques fairs that were held in Nantgarw house
and outbuildings in the 1990's.This was until the local authority changed
hands, and it was deemed by them that money should not be changing hands
in any Welsh Museum. This ridiculous red tape by the powers that be brought
to the end our famous little Nantgarw Antiques fairs and many say the
demise of the little museum itself. The revenue in stand charges and the
teas and cakes supplied free by the Friends of Nantgarw Pottery, was used
to buy priceless items of Nantgarw porcelain for the museum itself, and
pay for the lectures and talks that were frequently held there to a packed
audience --indeed the little house became alive again with excited collectors
lucky enough to get a seat,or as many - standing room only!..Some of the
dealers at these fairs were World famous names, they sold some of the best
Nantgarw and Swansea Porcelain you would ever wish to see, equal in quality
to many top museums,it was truly breathtaking.
Sadly some of these famous names have now passed away, and others are getting
on in years.Truly it is an honour to recall those happy days, when cups
of teas, sandwiches and home made cakes were served once again on the lawns
of Nantgarw pottery just as they used be in the days long ago when the
Pardoes were living in the house.
Many excavations were carried out there as the Kiln was rebuilt and the
pipe house restored down by the old canal, and the dug up "wasters"
or shards of pottery were laid out on the walls of the garden for any
visitor to take home as they wished..The cellar room where William Billingsley
produced the secret recipe for his best porcelain was always icy cold
and draughty, there is a spiral flight of stone steps leading down to this
special room from the ground floor. Our own stand, displaying our wares,
was either upstairs in the bedroom area or just inside the Parlour near
to the front door, where doubtless William Billingsley and his family sat
in the evenings chatting and smoking their clay pipes all those years
ago.
In the Spring, the little garden out the front was a mass of bluebells
and primroses, and in the Summer months it was the perfume of old Country
Roses and lavender that wafted in through the wide open door, near to where
we were sitting, eating our cucumber sandwiches and sipping our endless
cups of tea.We will never forget the little Antiques fairs,it was a wonderful
sight to see all the rows of Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain displayed
- plate after plate, cups and saucers, vases etc. all decorated to the highest
standard imagineable, and all displayed again in the house where they were
first made.
Well, just sharing a few thoughts that some of you may hopefully enjoy. |
