Introduction to Gaudy Welsh Gaudy Welsh first appeared in Staffordshire, England around the late 1820's. The main colours chosen for decoration were Orange,(dark and light) greens and cobalt blue, in addition turquoise, yellow and pink were also used along with gold and pink lustre. The earliest pattern without doubt was Tulip, although the Oyster pattern wasn't far behind. The Welsh potteries who were in fierce competition with the Staffordshire potteries for the open market, were alarmed when large consignments of Gaudy Welsh appeared for sale in Welsh auctions.Swansea immediately followed suit and started to produce their own Gaudy Welsh. It was made in the Cambrian pottery under Lewis Llewellyn Dillwyn and also at the South Wales pottery or Llanelly pottery which started production in 1839. It is also possible that the Ynysmedw pottery may also have made limited quantities of it, as new evidence emerges about this little known pottery in the Swansea Valley. The people of Wales, that is the working class, preferred the name of Swansea Cottage, and this term is still used today to describe Gaudy Welsh throughout the Principality, especially by the older generations of Welsh people. The Tulip pattern has also been called the Welsh Daffodil, and the Oyster pattern the Smoking Indian. Although these latter names have only been heard in South and West Wales. Gaudy Welsh adorned the much loved Welsh Dressers in cottages and farmhouses, and even today this is still the best way to display the wares.A huge amount was also shipped to the United States of America, where it was quickly adopted by the Welsh emigrants, who subsequently named most of the various patterns after the towns and areas in Wales that they had known and loved. These names are delightful and range from Bethesda in the North to Glamorgan in the South. Some names are called after flowers such as Marigold and Cambrian Rose. A few are strictly American in origin such as Wagon Wheel and Carousel. Gaudy Welsh was produced over a long period of time and Staffordshire potteries such as Allertons and Blairs continued production into the early 20th century. However the late Gaudy Welsh always has the manufacturer's name on the items, as opposed to the early wares which were 95% unmarked. Please refer to the end of this section for Gaudy Welsh Reference Book. Testimonial from one of our customers To: "Dianne - Glamorgan Antiques" <dianne@glamorganantiques.co.uk> Hi Dianne, |

GW102 | COLUMBINE
TEAPOT THAT HAS HAD A HARD LIFE!. The main fault is the staining the pot
had accrued,it could be nicotine and this would come out if the pot was
immersed in hot bleach water, the hot water will not harm it neither will
the bleach,in anyway. The handle is fine but the knobble where you put
your thumb is partly off, there is a chip to the inner flange also and
a hairline above the back handle. However someone may like this to bolster
up their collection. c 1850-55. £50. |

GW104 | Very
old Gaudy Welsh Sucrier or covered sugar bowl in the Colandine pattern. This
sucrier has no damage but it has some brown staining on the outside...This
has emanated through sitting on an open rack Welsh Dresser for over 140yrs.I
have seen plates so stained through drawing up the oils in the varnish
of the dressers, also absorbing the chimney and cooking smoke, depending
on the siting of the dresser. Some Gaudy welsh was kept behind glass so
you would not see this on those items. However a lovely primitive item
in good condition.£48.. |

Lovely Gaudy plate with a very unusual pattern.Bold pattern on this plate and it is a very old one dateing to 1825.There is an age line on the back across the centre, not really visible on the front ,and it has a faint hairline from the edge curving down about 3 inches,it has discoloured on the reverse on one corner, this was due to standing on a dresser at a particular angle, these old pottery items were faintly porous, and the smoke and heavy atmosphere emanating in a Victorian house was quite heavy. For sale at £69 |
