Introduction to Gaudy Welsh

Gaudy Welsh first appeared in Staffordshire, England around the late 1820's. The main colours chosen for decoration were Orange,(dark and light) greens and cobalt blue, in addition turquoise, yellow and pink were also used along with gold and pink lustre. The earliest pattern without doubt was Tulip, although the Oyster pattern wasn't far behind. The Welsh potteries who were in fierce competition with the Staffordshire potteries for the open market, were alarmed when large consignments of Gaudy Welsh appeared for sale in Welsh auctions.Swansea immediately followed suit and started to produce their own Gaudy Welsh. It was made in the Cambrian pottery under Lewis Llewellyn Dillwyn and also at the South Wales pottery or Llanelly pottery which started production in 1839. It is also possible that the Ynysmedw pottery may also have made limited quantities of it, as new evidence emerges about this little known pottery in the Swansea Valley. The people of Wales, that is the working class, preferred the name of Swansea Cottage, and this term is still used today to describe Gaudy Welsh throughout the Principality, especially by the older generations of Welsh people. The Tulip pattern has also been called the Welsh Daffodil, and the Oyster pattern the Smoking Indian. Although these latter names have only been heard in South and West Wales. Gaudy Welsh adorned the much loved Welsh Dressers in cottages and farmhouses, and even today this is still the best way to display the wares.A huge amount was also shipped to the United States of America, where it was quickly adopted by the Welsh emigrants, who subsequently named most of the various patterns after the towns and areas in Wales that they had known and loved. These names are delightful and range from Bethesda in the North to Glamorgan in the South. Some names are called after flowers such as Marigold and Cambrian Rose. A few are strictly American in origin such as Wagon Wheel and Carousel. Gaudy Welsh was produced over a long period of time and Staffordshire potteries such as Allertons and Blairs continued production into the early 20th century. However the late Gaudy Welsh always has the manufacturer's name on the items, as opposed to the early wares which were 95% unmarked.

Please refer to the end of this section for Gaudy Welsh Reference Book.

Click HERE for Larger PictureRare patterned Swansea Cottage cup and saucer dated c1815-20.The items have a very high white porcelain translucency, quite beautiful. The painting although restrained,is all hand painted, and this makes it a desirable item for your collection. It was possibly made in Swansea, the handle has a well known Swansea inward tilt. There is a slight impressed mark, maybe a heart or a diamond. The condition is excellent with no cracks or chips. The painting is not rubbed at all.Gaudy Welsh is a phrase coined by the Americans, also the pattern names ~~ but we still refer,in the Welsh principality, to all older items as "Swansea Cottage",the preferred name by older Welsh families..Lovely clean condition, superb condition £75 set.

Click HERE for Larger PictureStriking Swansea Cottage/Gaudy Welsh Footed bowl.
Here we are offering a very attractive bowl that measures about 8.5 inches in diameter. It has a raised base.As you can see the colours are beautiful and there is no wear to the enamels. The bowl would have been made in c1840-50 probably in the Cambrian works Swansea. There is a sharp diamond backstamp impressed underneath and this mark was used by Swansea on their pottery. There is some damage,a line crack runs down the side of the bowl through the pattern to the edge. This has been strengthened to give a good stablility and the bowl now rings true when tapped. Also a chip on the bottom, nothing major. The pot would look wonderful on display, the faults would not be seen unless the bowl was examined. So a fine good sized example ready for display in your home.£78

Click HERE for Larger PictureSuperb Gaudy Welsh/Swansea Cottage plate in striking colours. No damage at all. This is the old very rare pattern known around St Davids Pembrokeshire as the HAFOD pattern.HAFODTY translates as Summer Place or Summer Dwelling. The old hill farmers would drive their animals to the top pastures in the Summer months and the family would move up to the little HAFOD cottages leaving the larger HENDREF (Winter house)farmhouse lower down the valley. They may have used the HAFOD teaset during the Summer period, thus the inherited name.Lovely plate for sale £69.

Click HERE for Larger PictureGaudy Welsh early 19th century pottery cup and saucer.Super vibrant pattern, very bold.this lovely cup and saucer was made in Staffordshire,England. The pattern looks like one of the vine but seems very elaborate. No damage at all,but dresser staining showing on the back of the saucer only. This happens over a long period of time where standing pottery absorbs kitchen cooking - there were no extractor fans then and all fires were large open coal types. Beautiful item, clean as a pin, lovely pattern £49 cup and saucer.

Click HERE for Larger PictureCOLUMBINE TEAPOT THAT HAS HAD A HARD LIFE!. The main fault is the staining the pot had accrued,it could be nicotine and this would come out if the pot was immersed in hot bleach water, the hot water will not harm it neither will the bleach,in anyway. The handle is fine but the knobble where you put your thumb is partly off, there is a chip to the inner flange also and a hairline above the back handle. However someone may like this to bolster up their collection. c 1850-55. £50.

Click HERE for Larger PictureVery old Gaudy Welsh Sucrier or covered sugar bowl in the Colandine pattern. This sucrier has no damage but it has some brown staining on the outside...This has emanated through sitting on an open rack Welsh Dresser for over 140yrs.I have seen plates so stained through drawing up the oils in the varnish of the dressers, also absorbing the chimney and cooking smoke, depending on the siting of the dresser. Some Gaudy welsh was kept behind glass so you would not see this on those items. However a lovely primitive item in good condition.£48..

Click HERE for Larger PictureSuper Mid Victorian (c1855-65) Gaudy Welsh "tulip" pattern teapot. Here we are offering a very nice item that is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. The pot would have been in use regularly, and it shows some tea staining inside the pot, also a bit of discolouration on the spout, this was due to animal bone ash in the clay, and determines the age as mid Victorian.(The modern Bone china process is far more refined now and does not leave marks)The pattern is actually heavier, the green is darker and far more striking in reality than the photo shows. This looks like one of the Vine patterns,it is a very early heavy pottery plate in vibrant colours that was made in Staffordshire,England around 1845.There is no damage at all but the plate is showing dresser/kitchen staining on the back. This often happens when items have been on open racked dressers in kitchens of farmhouses etc.Large open fires (no extractor fan then) and continual use of the items would account for this. However the pattern is still bold and the colours true.A lovely clean plate,a very old one too. £58.
